quick update

My new placement is on a care of the elderly ward which I love, despite the fact it is a medical ward and that I only get elderly patients. There are ups and downs, lots of death, confused patients, dying patients, moaning patients etc. But it is brilliant. brilliant staff, I enjoy the patients and I am learning alot.

It is hard fitting everything in, what with placement, essays to write a boyfriend to see, friends to see, etc etc.

I think I am doing ok but some things are confusing me and some things are getting me down but I think everything will work out and I will figure things out with time.

sorry for the lack of updates. This isnt a proper post update as I am getting ready for placement. Today I'm not doing the usual, working with the residential team visiting old people's homes. Today I'm going with one of the nurses to his docto's surgery to dsee what a practice nurse does. I'm a little nervous about finding the place as it's in another town even further away but at least the train journey is sorter. I was hoping to get a bus but the bus doesnt get come early enough to get me there plus it takes over an hour where the train is 15minutes.

Anyway what I came to write is some of the letters which I need to post got wet. The rain came down so heavy it not only soaked, through my coat, drenched my trousers, shoes and knickers but it soaked through my bag so I need to check how badly damaged the letters are and rewrite them. I'm really sorry for the delay in my replies.

I got my trousers, socks and coat tumble dryed by the lady in the laundry at a home, I sat n there wearing some granny trousers, then when mine dried I borrowed some soks, stuffed my shoes with paper towels and set to work until my socks were dry and my coat was dried. the laundry lady is an angel.

I need some labels, either sticky ones or ones printed on paper. I used to print mine off on paper but my pc and printer is at Elouise's. Mum doesn't have a printer here. I'd be happy to swap for something, or if someone knows where I can order some online could they direct me to the right place.

One of the fbs I made and posted in a letter came back to me. It wasn't a finished one, in fact it was just started which means that a letter I posted out has become opened, I hope the person still gets the letter. I can't remember who I sent that fb too so if anyone gets an opened letter let me know. I really hope the letter reaches them.

I haven't updated for a long while, alot has been going on here both good and bad.

The good is I got my results. In my exam I got an A2- I am shocked and excited, my goal when I returned to uni was to get my first A at uni. I didn't expect it this semester as it was so hard, it has proved to me that I am smart and I can achieve if I work for it. My confidence has been boosted and I have more faith in my ability as a nurse.

I got a B2 in my essay. My goal now is to achieve an A1 (A*) in uni.

I have been on placements in theatres. I have been having the most wonderful experiences. My favourite has been the two weeks I spent in Gynae theatres, I had a brilliant mentor and I learnt lots about female anatomy, female surgery, theatre protocol, sterile fields and I even got to be a scrub nurse for a Total abdominal hysterectomy. the surgeon accidentally squirted local anaesthetic in my eye, luckily it caused me no problems, it was near the end of the surgery and I had to unscrub to wash my eyes.

I am now in main theatres recovery which is interesting, alot of waiting around to get a patient but when you get one there is alot to do. The lady I was working with today was impressed at my drug knowlege and it has spurred me on to learn more. I have a real thirst to learn about so much to do with nursing. Today I gave an injection. It was the second time I gave an injection. The same drug as last time, Clexane, it prevents DVT's. I was a bit nervous as I couldn't remember how to do it but the lady talked me through, she said I have a really good technique and I stick it in like a dart.

I have been out alot more, having fun and spending time with friends. I have been mainly hanging out with isabel and it is fabulous to be getting close to her again. On sunday I met Ali who is an LJ friend so now I have met three people from LJ.

I have been shopping lots and have some new clothes and a new bag and several pairs of new shoes. I need to start saving again. My weight is remaining stable as far as I know. I havent been weighing myself but I still feel a healthy weight.

My iron is low again and I have been feeling tired and I think I have been suffering from allergies (either hayfever, to mum's cats or Issie's dogs)

I haven't been working whilst on this placement.

I haven't written many letters. Something terrible has happened but I wont go into it now. I just got my letter stuff out, I just bunged everything into the drawer.

I found a letter I wrote to Bobbi jo which I'll post soon.

Anna's letter came back minus the stamp so i'll post that again.

I started Dani's letter over two weeks ago and plan to finish that.

I have been so busy with my essay and revison for my exam. This essay is hard to complete but I am nearly there. My exam is next week thursday and my essay due in on wednesday. maybe it isn't good to be negavtive but I think I will fail one if not both and have to resit. They are both really hard and nothing is sticking in my brain. I need to be able to concentrate more. Everything is so hectic, since Grandad died there is lots going on with the family, I am having to continue to work at my part time job although this working week (weds-tues) I am only doing 9 hours but there is an extra 9 hours travel, I need to email off all of the Melbourne hospitals I want to apply to, i have found a list and now need to go to the sites and choose my departments and email them. Actuall I will start on that now instead of my revision, i'll just print off some stuff to learn on the bus to and from work.
    My next placement is in theatres. i also need to go to the placements office and find out if I done enough hours in my first year so I will only have to do 6 weeks instead of 8. i'd love to do 8 weeks but i need to work to save money for australia.
     One of the nursing lecturers has asked if anyone has made links with a hospital in India because they want to make links out there. I may ask her if they have links with any in Melbourne. The lecturer in charge says we all have to find our own hospitals for our electives but Kim is fantastic and may be able to help me out.
     dad wants to take us to canada in August for two weeks. To toronto.
I want to get into label bags and decos more so if any of my pals swap these too cxould you let me know. Oh and slams too.

I need some more fb swappers really. I'm so upset about all the ones with my old address in, but I am gonna get the msn addy's for my housemates. Naz and Katherine just started their nursing in september I think Katherines combined degree is four years and naz's is three plus Dean is doing pharamcology and has about two years left. he's moving onto campus for the next year as he has a job on campus and they give u free accomodation, he's got the posh campus too with en suite. he'll be the eldest as most campus rooms are full of freshers. I didn't know dean changed to Pharmacology, he was a physio. I did wonder why i never saw him in uniform or he never went on placement. he said he changed two years ago. Maybe I can ask him if he has any drugs books that I could use to revise, thats if he's not using them.

I need to go to the LRC and get some researching literature books and one more piece of research to include in my essay. I think I am going to look for a journal article, i already have European commission directorate, Nice Guidlines and NHS Scotland better practice clinical guidline and one nursing standard article, so I'll go for another journal article i think. I hate searching the electronic databases because all most articles arent available for free in full. We get in trouble for using google. I used google for my european commsions research and had to spend ages figuring out how i can get there without using google. We have to detail the search process for this stupid essay.

I bought sims 2 open for business. I can't believe I still crave cigarettes every now and again. I cracked once since January but its 5 months and two weeks since I quit. I'm pleased about that. I am concerned that it will be hard moving back into mums and smelling the cigarrettes but they wont give me a cigarette. Mum said they want to quit. I hope she does, she already had a mini stroke and she has high cholestoral although her blood pressure like mine is low. I don't want her getting ill from smoking. I think after seeing Grandad with his emphyseema she's starting to really want to quit.

I think i am going to ask dad to take me to Grandads grave. I decided not to go to the funeral and dont know where he is buried but I would like to know so I can just go there even if only once.

I hope everyone is all ok. It may be a while to I reply to the letters posted to mum's as I have no plans to go down until my exams are finished. I may go on the friday to clean out wy room. It wont even really be my room as it will be the computer room too and it winds me up so much when everyone leaves their plates in their and rubbish. I'm gonna ask dad not to smoke in there. I'm gonna teach mum how to use the computer as she has said she wants to learn.

Across the road from mum's is the sports centre so I plan to go swimming again i haven't been for years, I may take a class, Sonia does water aerobics i've done that before I quite enjoyed it but I think I would like to take kick boxing if they do it and it isnt pricy. I plan to buy a discount card from the council. It's £5 and you can use all the facillities cheaply.

OK well enough of my nonsense i'm going to go apply to the hospitals.
